Top 10 best black hat hacking films of all time

With the winter nights drawing in, The Daily Swig brings you a list of the top hacking movies of all time.

We've decided to divide our Top 10 list between genre classics and some out-of-the-box ideas, encompassing titles that include hacking only in the broadest sense.

Instead of ranking these films ourselves, we decided to conduct an online poll. We conducted a second poll after limiting a shortlist of 16 to four finalists... and the results are in!

Without further ado, here are the top ten hacking movies of all time:

1. Mr. Robot (TV Series 2015-2019)

Hacktivist turned vigilante hacker Elliot Alderson becomes engaged in a complex political battle caused by an underground hacking group's attempts to bring down a corrupt organization.

Elliot Alderson said it best: "A bug is never just a mistake." It stands for something bigger. An error in reasoning that shapes who you are.

2. Hackers (1995)

Johnny Lee Miller and future ex-wife Angelina Jolie star as members of a rag-tag hacking group unknowingly set up as the fall men in a nefarious computer-based extortion conspiracy.

Dade Murphy's best quote: "Hack the earth!"

Swig score

The movie that created a thousand memes. In tech circles, he is both loved and despised.

3.The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, third (2011)

Lisbeth Salander, the movie's titular hacker, is partnered with journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) on a case involving a missing person. The two unearth widespread murder and corruption in an unforgiving Swedish drama that is credited with helping to popularize Scandi-noir.

best saying

"Nicolai Blomkvist What do you have to say?"

"Reading your notes, Lisbeth Salander"

"They are encrypted, says Mikael Blomkvist.

Please, Liberty Slender begs, looking up at him."

4. Sneakers (1992)

Martin Bishop (Robert Redford), the leader of a dysfunctional team of penetration testers, become involved in a plot after his team is threatened into stealing a top-secret black box. A wonderful double feature with Three Days of the Condor (1975), another Redford production.

Best citation: Cosmo Weapons, energy, or financial resources no longer govern the planet. Little bits of data, or ones and zeros, power it. All that exists are electrons.

5. War Games (1983)

Playing "Global Thermonuclear Warfare," David Lightman (Matthew Broderick) unintentionally breaks into a US military supercomputer. High anxiety follows. Possibly the first "hack-sploitation" movie, which popularized the stereotype of hackers as bored teens in their homes doing bad things with computers while being far in over their heads.

Best David Lightman quotation Hey, I don't think any system is completely safe.

Mutually Assured Destruction gets a Swig rating.

6. The Matrix (1999)

When hacker Thomas Anderson, also known as Neo (Keanu Reeves), takes the red pill, he learns that his reality is stranger and riskier than he could have ever imagined. Anderson leads an uprising against computer agents determined to use all means necessary to put an end to the human uprising.

best saying

Trinity: Trinity is my name.

The Trinity, Neo? Who broke into the IRS data base?

That happened a long time ago, Trinity.

John: Jesus

Three: What?

Neo: I mistakenly believed that you were a man.

Trinity: A lot of men do.

Swig score

Whoa. The Matrix Resurrections, which will be released in December 2021, is projected to be better than the two bloated sequels that let down the original's tightly wound plot.

The Matrix introduced a cyberpunk aesthetic to movies.

7. Die Hard (1988)

John McClane, an off-duty New York police officer, is the thorn in the side of 'exceptional thief' Hans Gruber's (Alan Rickman) and his criminal schemes. Bruce Willis plays John McClane. best saying

Laura Poitras produced a documentary about Edward Snowden, the NSA whistleblower who was a former intelligence contractor. As a result of Snowden's exposure of leaked information, many scenes are set in Hong Kong, where he initially sought temporary asylum from US authorities. These documents showed the extent of US snooping on its own citizens as well as other contentious surveillance programmers.

Best Edward Snowden quote: We are creating the most powerful tool of oppression in human history
