Samsung Admits Data Breach That Leaked Details About Some US Customers
This is the second time this year that South Korean chaebol Samsung has disclosed a cyber security incident that led to the unlawful access of certain customer information.
Samsung stated in a notice that "in late July 2022, an unauthorised third-party obtained information from several of Samsung's U.S. networks." We discovered through our continuing investigation that certain customers' personal information was compromised on or about August 4, 2022.
Samsung said that the incident gave hackers access to information on product registrations, names, contact information, demographic data, and dates of birth.
Although it emphasised that the incident did not affect users' Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, or debit card numbers, it was stated that the information that was compromised for each pertinent consumer may differ.
According to the corporation, the information gathered is essential to ensuring that customers have the greatest possible experiences with its goods and services. Why it took the corporation over a month to disclose the breach and who was responsible for the intrusion are both unknown.
Additionally, it advises users to keep an eye out for possible social engineering tactics, refrain from clicking on links or opening attachments from e-mails from people they don't know, and check their accounts for any potentially unusual activity.
Less than six months after Samsung confirmed a related incident, the announcement was made. In March 2022, it disclosed that internal information, like as the source code for its Galaxy devices, had been exposed following a sting operation by the LAPSUS$ extortion group.
